Grocery shopping in Geneva is straightforward, with several supermarket chains catering to different budgets and preferences. Here’s a breakdown of the main options:

  • Discounters (Lowest Prices): Denner, Aldi, and Lidl offer the most affordable prices, often with a limited but sufficient selection of products.
  • Mid-Range Supermarkets: Migros and Coop are the most common supermarkets in Geneva (and Switzerland). They provide a wide range of products, including fresh produce, household goods, and ready-made meals. While both are similar in price, Coop is generally slightly more expensive. Both Migros and Coop also offer home delivery services, making it even easier to shop from home.
  • Premium Supermarkets: Manor Food and Globus cater to those looking for high-quality, gourmet products, often at higher prices than Coop or Migros.
  • Specialty Stores: for a wider selection of international ingredients, specialty stores are the best option. While Coop and Migros offer some imported goods, these shops have a much greater variety. They are mainly found around Rue de la Servette, Cornavin train station, and the Pâquis neighborhood.

Coop and Migros Loyalty Programs

Both Coop and Migros offer loyalty programs, respectively Supercard and Cumulus which are free to join and provide various benefits. These programs have dedicated apps where you can activate discounts before heading to the supermarket. As you shop, you collect points that can later be converted into store credit. For instance, with Coop’s Supercard, you can turn 1000 “Superpoints” into 10 CHF credit, which can be redeemed at Coop stores. The points earned through these programs are not limited to groceries, they can also be collected and used at other stores owned by the respective grocery chains. Coop’s Supercard can be used at places like Interdiscount (electronics), Fust (home appliances), Jumbo (DIY and gardening), and even Coop gas stations. Meanwhile, Migros’ Supercard works at Obi and Do It Garden (DIY and gardening stores), as well as Migrol gas stations.

Alcohol Stores: Where to Buy

In addition to supermarkets, Nicolas is a popular chain dedicated to selling wine, spirits, and other alcoholic beverages. For those looking for budget-friendly alcohol, Denner also offers a good selection.

Opening Hours & Sundays

Most supermarkets in Geneva follow these opening hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 08:00-19:00 or 20:00 (shops usually close later on Thursday in the Canton of Geneva)
  • Saturday: 08:00-18:00
  • Sunday: Closed

However, there are exceptions for last-minute shopping. Some convenience stores, such as small Coop Pronto and Migrolino shops, remain open on Sundays. Additionally, the Migros at Cornavin train station and at the airport are open daily, making them a reliable option when everything else is closed.

Fun Fact: No Alcohol at Migros

One unique aspect of Migros is that it does not sell alcohol. This policy dates back to the company’s founder, Gottlieb Duttweiler, who aimed to promote public health by keeping alcohol out of his stores. For beer, wine, or spirits, shoppers will need to visit Coop, Denner, or specialized liquor stores like Nicolas (here is another fun fact: both Denner and Nicolas are owned by Migros).
