The Stick’AIR macaron is an air quality vignette used in Geneva to regulate driving during episodes of high air pollution. Introduced on 15 January 2020, the measure was first applied in August 2025 when pollution levels triggered restrictions. The sticker is placed on your vehicle’s windshield and classifies it into categories based on environmental impact, considering factors like engine type and emissions standard. Less polluting vehicles receive a more favorable category.

When the Stick’AIR is required
The vignette is only required during official pollution alerts. On these days, the canton may restrict the circulation of the most polluting vehicles, while cleaner ones may continue driving. Motorists without the appropriate sticker risk a fine. Certain vehicles, such as emergency services, public transport, CD/CC, and those transporting people with reduced mobility, are exempt. All other vehicles, regardless of driver status, are subject to the Stick’AIR system, including vehicles registered in other cantons or abroad.
How to obtain the Stick’AIR
You can obtain the Stick’AIR macaron for CHF 5 at most garages, petrol stations, and the Cantonal Office for Vehicles in Geneva. Registration details are required to assign the correct category. Once purchased, the sticker remains valid for the vehicle’s lifetime.
Bulletins, alerts, and free transport
When restrictions are activated, the canton publishes a bulletin, which can be checked on the official cantonal website, Air2G2 website and mobile apps
. Residents are also informed via local newspapers and the radio. During days with restrictions, public transport in Geneva (“zone 10”) is made free for everyone. This encourages people to leave their cars at home and ensures the city remains accessible even when driving is limited. The speed limit on the highway portion that goes around Geneva (“autoroute de contournement”) is reduced to 80 km/h during pollution peaks.
Exemptions for diplomatic and consular vehicles (CD and CC)
Vehicles registered with diplomatic (CD) or consular (CC) plates are exempt from the obligation to display a Stick’AIR sticker. This exemption applies regardless of the vehicle’s emissions category.
