In Switzerland, certain holders of a legitimation card issued by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs can benefit from special conditions when purchasing a new vehicle.
Legitimation cards are issued to employees of permanent missions, embassies, consulates, and international organizations working in Switzerland. The card serves as both a residence permit and confirmation of the privileges and immunities granted to the holder during their assignment.
Many car manufacturers offer a diplomatic discount program. These programs can significantly reduce the purchase price compared with the base catalog price.
However, the conditions depend on the manufacturer and on the type of legitimation card you hold. Understanding the basic rules can help you decide whether this option is worth exploring.
What is a diplomatic car discount?
A diplomatic car discount is a preferential price offered by certain manufacturers to members of the diplomatic and international community.
For premium brands in particular, the discount can be substantial compared with the base catalog price. It is typically applied through an authorized dealership.
There are several points to keep in mind:
- Discounts generally apply only to new vehicles that have never been registered.
- The discount is applied to the base catalog price of the vehicle.
- It cannot usually be combined with other promotional offers or incentives.
- Some manufacturers impose a waiting period before another diplomatic purchase is allowed.
In practice, this means you typically have to choose between the diplomatic price or any ongoing commercial promotion.
Who can benefit from diplomatic car discounts?
Eligibility depends on the type of legitimation card issued by the Swiss authorities.
In general, diplomatic discount programs are available to holders of the following cards:
- Type B
- Type C
- Type D
- Type E
- Type S (Swiss nationals employed by international organizations)
The exact conditions can vary depending on the brand and dealership. Some manufacturers restrict their programs to specific categories of international staff.
Tax privileges for certain diplomats
In addition to manufacturer discounts, some buyers may also benefit from exemption from certain duties and taxes when importing or purchasing a vehicle.
These privileges depend on the type of legitimation card issued by the Swiss authorities and must follow specific administrative procedures.
For holders of type B or C legitimation cards:
- A first vehicle may be imported or purchased free of duties and taxes.
- This vehicle is subject to a three year commitment period and cannot be sold or transferred in Switzerland during that time unless the applicable duties and taxes are paid.
- The vehicle may be transferred earlier if the new owner is also entitled to import or purchase a vehicle under diplomatic privileges and agrees to take over the commitment.
Staff members with these cards may also import or purchase a second vehicle under diplomatic privileges.
- This second vehicle is granted under an unlimited commitment period.
- It cannot be sold or transferred in Switzerland unless the duties and taxes are paid.
- It may be transferred only if the new owner is also entitled to benefit from the same diplomatic privilege and agrees to take over the commitment.
Once the three year commitment period for the first vehicle has passed, it can generally be sold or transferred in Switzerland without paying those duties or taxes.
Holders of type D or E legitimation cards may also benefit from a tax-free vehicle purchase in a specific situation. When first taking up their position in Switzerland, or when returning after an absence of at least three years, they may import or purchase one vehicle free of duties and taxes.
This possibility can only be used once and must generally be exercised within five years of starting the assignment.
The vehicle is then subject to a limited commitment period:
- The vehicle cannot be sold or transferred in Switzerland for three years without paying the applicable duties and taxes.
- It may be transferred earlier only if the new owner is also entitled to purchase or import a vehicle under diplomatic privileges and agrees to take over the commitment.
- After three years, the vehicle can normally be sold in Switzerland without paying those duties or taxes.
Swiss nationals employed by international organizations with a type S legitimation card are not entitled to these tax exemptions.
Dealerships familiar with diplomatic sales usually guide buyers through the administrative process.
Leasing and financing considerations
Some buyers consider leasing instead of purchasing.
However, leasing terms for diplomatic purchases are often different from standard retail contracts. In particular:
- Leasing rates can sometimes be higher when the diplomatic discount is applied.
- Some leasing companies have additional administrative requirements for holders of legitimation cards.
For this reason, the financial advantage of the diplomatic discount is not always as large when leasing is involved.
Do all car brands offer diplomatic discounts?
Diplomatic discount programs are most common among premium manufacturers.
Luxury brands often maintain dedicated programs for the diplomatic community, sometimes managed at the European or global level.
By contrast, non premium brands often provide smaller discounts through diplomatic programs. In many cases, their standard commercial promotions may already offer comparable or better pricing.
For this reason, it is often useful to compare both options before making a decision.
How to access a diplomatic car purchase program
The process is usually straightforward if you meet the eligibility criteria.
Most buyers follow a simple approach:
- Contact the manufacturer or dealership of the brand you are interested in.
- Confirm whether a diplomatic sales program is available.
- Provide your legitimation card and any required documentation.
- Review the pricing conditions and any ownership restrictions.
Dealerships that regularly work with the diplomatic community are generally familiar with the administrative steps involved.
Contacting the brand directly is usually the best way to understand what discounts or benefits may apply in your situation.
