If you’re leaving Switzerland for good, don’t forget to take care of your public transport subscriptions. Whether you have a monthly TPG pass in Geneva, a national Half Fare Card, or an AG (Abonnement Général), canceling them properly can save you money and avoid automatic renewals.

Canceling a TPG pass (Geneva)

For the TPG annual pass, you can request a refund of the unused portion only if your subscription started less than 182 days ago. Refunds are not granted if the subscription has been active for more than 182 days.

Additionally, if your pass was subsidized by the canton of Geneva or your commune, no refund will be given.

To request a refund, you need to:

  • Submit the official refund request form available on the TPG website
  • Provide proof of deregistration from Geneva (such as a commune deregistration certificate)

Refunded amounts correspond to the full unused months remaining after the cancellation date, minus a CHF 20 processing fee.

Monthly TPG passes cannot be refunded; they simply expire at the end of the paid month. If you don’t request a refund for your annual pass, it will simply expire at the end of 12th month (and will not be renewed automatically).

Canceling a Swiss Rail pass (SBB/CFF)

For national subscriptions such as the Half Fare Card, AG (Abonnement Général), or regional travelcards, rules differ.

Half Fare card

This card usually renews automatically. You must cancel it online or in writing at least one month before the renewal date, or it will be extended for another year and billed accordingly.

To cancel (two options):

  • Log in to your SwissPass account and cancel online or
  • Send a signed written request by post or email to SBB customer service (a link to a template will be added).

AG Travelcard (Abonnement Général)

AG cards can be canceled early, and partial refunds may be possible depending on how long the subscription has been active.

  • The refund amount is calculated based on unused full months, minus an administrative fee.
  • For AGs paid monthly, a minimum contract period usually applies.
  • Proof of departure is not always required but can help in exceptional cases.

Regional travelcards (e.g., unireso, mobilis, frimobil)

Each regional transport network has its own cancellation policy. Most allow cancellation if you:

  • Contact the issuing office
  • Provide your SwissPass number or subscription ID
  • Request cancellation before the next renewal date.

Check the exact terms on the respective network’s website.

Tip: deactivate auto-renewals in advance

Some transport subscriptions, especially those tied to your SwissPass account, renew automatically. Be sure to:

  • Log in to your SwissPass account
  • Deactivate auto-renewal where possible
  • Make all cancellations in writing or online if possible, as early as possible (and make sure to keep the confirmation emails of the cancellations)

Taking these steps before leaving Switzerland will help you avoid unwanted charges after your departure.
